Louis XVI Style Pair of White Marble & Gilt Bronze Covered Urns, Mid 19th Century

A lovely pair of French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and white marble urns. Each urn has a round marble base decorated with ormolu “pearls” and raised on 3 bronze casters. Rising up from the base are 3 “ram hooves” each ending with a classical & carefully carved “Pan’s head”. A central bronze ring holds the legs firm.

The lovely white marble main vessel is delicately curved and decorated in the upper register by acanthus leaves garland on all 3 sides and ultimately links the Pans’ heads. The upper part of the main vessel is decorated by a carved Ormolu wreath of foliage and topped with a blackberry shaped finial.

These lovely Louis XVI Style urns were in high fashion under Napoleon the Third’s reign.
This pair is an elegant and luxurious addition to grace any mantelpiece or commode.
