Monumental & Whimsical Majolica Mermaids & Clam Shell, Vertical Centerpiece, Circa 1880
General, PotteryAn exceptional and monumental majolica centerpiece, circa 1880, featuring two finely modelled mermaid figures resting on a sea bed in high relief with playful dolphin fish beneath. The mermaids are positioned on opposite sides of a central tree/leaf column, supporting an oversized clam shell formed bowl with a turquoise textured interior glaze. Richly glazed in vibrant hues of blue, green, yellow, pink, and brown, the colours are beautifully enhanced by the depth and sheen of the majolica glaze.
Victorian majolica, particularly around the 1880s, was indeed influenced by both revivalist and naturalistic design principles, often blending elements of both styles. Many pieces drew inspiration from historical styles, like Italian Renaissance majolica, while others embraced a new, naturalistic aesthetic, often incorporating whimsical or fantasy elements inspired by detailed depictions of the flora and fauna of the natural world. This style reflected the Victorian fascination with science and the natural world, including Darwinism and natural history.
This magnificent majolica piece incorporates elements of both revivalist and naturalistic design evident in the various elements like the enormous “rainbow” glazed clam shell shaped “bowl”, the “dancing” sea mermaids and the fantastical plant images in the “tree/leaf/floral” column.
A whimsical, highly decorative large majolica centerpiece, for any room and surely to spark converation.
