Handsome English Regency William IV Mahogany Fold Over Tea/Console Table Early 19th century

Very handsome English Regency William IV mahogany fold over console/tea table circa 1830s. It is called a ‘tea table’ because it has the added functional design of being opened up and used for serving tea. The gorgeous thick solid mahogany table leaf turns to reveal a storage compartment beneath. The leaf folds open on original brass hinges to rest on four elegant turned tapering feet, revealing the spectacular rich brown mahogany top which is in excellent condition. The front apron has a mahogany framed frieze.

Regency furniture is a period of classical furniture. The “neoclassical” antique style was mixed with “empire” style and carried on through William IVs reign (1830-1837) where more curves and some elegant decoration of smoother “French” polished finishes was introduced. Mahogany was still used by most furniture makers along with brass hardware. French polishing came into vogue around 1810 and allowed for smoother, shiner finishes.

This spectacular console table aside from its original purpose of serving tea, suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a hall table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table.
