Late 18th / Early 19th Century Irish Sterling Silver Potato Ring – (possibly) William Gethen, Dublin

A fine late Georgian Irish sterling silver potato ring (possibly) William Gethen of Dublin, circa 1790–1810. Featuring pierced Rococo-style sides with scrolling foliage and cartouche panels.   Potato rings were designed to hold a ceramic or glass liner for serving vegetables at table and are now highly sought after, particularly early Irish examples by documented Dublin makers.

Irish potato rings start showing up right at the end of the 18th century — and become fashionable in the early 1800s and the early ones are quite rare.

There is no date stamp, but the hallmarks include the crowned Harp (.925 standard) and the Hiberna mark (for Dublin).  W.G (possibly W.C) is the maker but there is W.C with dot in-between only W.G for William Gethen.
William Gethen was registered in 1789, Dublin, Ireland.
