Rare & Impressive Art Nouveau Viennese “Cold Painted” Bronze by Renowned Franz Xaver Bergmann Foundry, Native American Figure Smoking a Peace Pipe on a Rug, Signed & Marked, Circa 1900
GeneralA rare and impressive large-scale Vienna bronze by the renowned Franz Xaver Bergmann foundry (c. 1900). This cold-painted bronze depicts a Native American man in a ceremonial pose, crouching upon a masterfully cast “woven” rug while holding a long, feathered peace pipe. Unlike the more common miniatures, this substantial cabinet piece offers incredible detail, from the fringe of the mat to the expressive features of the figure.
The underside of the rug is deeply stamped with the authentic Bergmann “B” in an amphora (urn) logo and the “Geschützt” (copyright) mark. The figure is securely mounted to the base with original period screws, consistent with authentic turn-of-the-century Viennese craftsmanship.
The bronze is in excellent antique condition. The cold-painted polychrome finish retains much of its original pigment with a beautiful, authentic patina. Most importantly, the delicate pipe and headdress remain intact and original.
Native American subjects are significantly rarer in the Bergmann catalog than the traditional Orientalist figures. This piece represents a premier investment for collectors of Western Americana, Fine Bronze, or Austrian Art Nouveau.
