18th Century European “Tombeau” Shape Commode Mahogany & Inlaid with 2 Front Drawers & 2 Side Drawers.Furniture
An attractive and unusual 18th Century European (possibly Dutch) “tombeau’ commode with 2 large bottom drawers and two unusual drawers that pull out from each side. The chest has marquetry inlay around each of the front drawers (top front drawer is fake) and a large round marquetry inlay oval design centred on the top and inlaid shells on the corners.
The drawer pulls have been replaced with English style Georgian pulls that depict a reclining Grecian woman – that give an English look to the piece. There is also a bronze mount at the bottom of the front below the lowest drawer and thin bronze mounting down both curved front sides of the chest from top to bottom along with mounts at the feet.
The chest measures 40 inches wide x 22 inches deep x 35 inches tall.
