18th Century Period Louis XV Kingwood 2 Drawer Commode with Thick, Heavy Marble Top – circa 1730

Spectacularly, this classic 18th century French Louis XV style commode has all the best historical features of the period that focus on elaborate design, curves, and above all luxury. Starting with the thick gorgeous Italian marble-top, with an unbelievably uniform mixture of  “cappuccino cream and chocolate” colouration bounded by the edge’s “serpentine” shape and culminating in a smooth rounded beveled edge.

These serpentine and curved elements are echoed throughout the piece especially in the kingwood inlay “bome form” front design.  The visual focus is kept to the centre front by the detailed kingwood inlay variation and by the uplifting lower symmetrical double serpentine kingwood edge.

The deep two-drawer chest has stunning cast bronze embellishments: namely the corner mounts, the large drawer pulls and scaled up key locks all elaborately detailed to emphasize and add to the “luxury”of the whole piece, like icing on the cake!
