19th Century Edmé Samson Porcelain Hand Painted Figure of Shakespeare.

A very colourful and well painted heavy porcelain figure of William Shakespeare.  Shakespeare leans on books on a pedestal in colourful clothing and dark burgundy cape.  The figure’s shape is taken from a well known 18th Century English porcelain version – but the base is more French in style than the English rectangular shape.

Samson was known for copying designs – but in a very high quality.

Edmé Samson was born in Paris in 1810. His company Edmé Samson et Cie was created in 1845. The manufacture, which continued production until 1969, is known for copying designs of other porcelain makers. Samson Ceramics copied designs by Chelsea, Meissen, Sevres as well as many Chinese export porcelain items.

Measures:  11 1/2 inches high x 7 inches wide.

Marked on back with a “Chelsea” anchor style mark.
