Amazing Pair of Neo-Classical Style Large Ornate Gilt Bronze Ewers 19th Century

Magnificent and large, this antique pair of gilt bronze ewer urns are in the neo-classical revival style dating to the 19th century and depict mythological imagery in rich decorative relief .  Lions, medusas, victory wreaths, sea creatures with shells,  the eagle biting the serpent,  all are associated with icons of the universal struggle the heavens/earth vs the underworld, virtue versus adversity, good vs evil.

The ewers stand on a heavily decorated round base each with 2 with half shells and 2 sea creatures that diametrically wrap and entwine scrolls that form the support column for the jug. Molded scrolling acanthus leaves hold the jug and continue to form the large encrusted handle with a lion at the base culminating at the top with an eagle biting a serpent.

A fine quality pair of decorative ewers dating from the early to mid 19th century.

Dimensions: height 19.5″ x width 10″ x diameter of the base 6″
