Australian Oil Painting on Canvas – John Peter Russell (1858-1930) – “Interior Scene with Seated Lady” – Signed & Dated 1883

A beautifully painted interior scene of a woman seated on a wooden chair in a kitchen with a stone floor, sitting by a table with covered with bowls and carrots.  This is an early work by John Peter Russell (1858-1930) – better known in his later career as an impressionist painter.

A large bowl filled with vegetables has tipped over on the floor.  The woman has a letter in her hands and has a look as if she’s received some news.  A grandfather clock sits in the background and in a further room beyond the clock is a older lady sitting, perhaps doing needlework.

Lovely colours and beautifully painted.  Framed in a gilt wood and plaster frame.

John Peter Russell (Australian, 1858–1930) is known as Australia’s lost Impressionist. Born in Sydney, Russell sailed to London in 1880 to train at the Slade School of Art. He then made his way to Paris to study with Fernand Cormon between 1883 and 1884. His friends at the time included Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Émile Bernard. Having married Rodin’s favorite model, Marianne Antoinette Matiocco, he settled in Belle-Ille, where he established an artists’ colony. There, he entertained friends, and worked with Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse, all of whom held his work in high esteem.
