ArtA circa 1900 Berlin K.P.M. porcelain plaque titled “Der Eremit” (The Hermit) after the original oil painting by Salomon Koninck (Dutch, 1609-1659). The scene depicts an elderly bearded man reading from a book in a wooded landscape.
The famous Dutch master Koninck was a painter of genre scenes, the subjects that reflect everyday life and portraits. He moved in the circles of Rembrandt, making many copies of Rembrandt’s compositions. His style as we see in this KPM copy of Koninck’s painting style, the influence of Rembrandt: the level of detail especially in the “hermit’s face, the soft lighting and warm colour palette.
Impressed “K.P.M.” and sceptre marks on the reverse. Signature on the front lower right “Koch” . Circa: 1900.
