Berlin KPM Porcelain Plaque “The Little Fruit Seller” After Spanish Oil Painting Master Murillo, Late 19th Century
Art, PorcelainsBerlin KPM porcelain plaque after the oil painting by famous Spanish master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), “The Little Fruit Seller” with a boy and girl seated beside a basket of grapes counting coins. Very finely painted, depicting a boy holding a basket, overflowing with grapes and pears, as the girl carefully counts out her money to the young seller.
Although Murillo is better known for his works on religious topics, his genre scenes undoubtedly play a big part in the legacy of one of the most important painters in 17th-century Spain. The artist created a series of paintings, with good-natured humor, documenting Sevillian street life. The main characters of these works are children, touching depictions of street urchins, beggars, and flower girls were likely commissioned by itinerant Flemish merchants who frequented the city. While this subject matter might have been familiar to viewers in the Protestant Dutch Republic, it was boldly revolutionary in Catholic Spain.
Mounted in a relief gilt frame and impressed KPM and scepter marks on reverse.
