Canadian Landscape Oil Painting Pair “B.C. Rocky Mountain Landscapes” by Stuart Clifford Shaw 1896-1970, Oil on Board CA 1940

Stuart Clifford Shaw was born in 1896 on a farm near Collingwood, Ontario. From 1910, he lived in Toronto  where he attended the Toronto Technical School, studying under J.W. Beatty and F.S. Challener. Shaw’s subjects over the years included rural landscapes, wilderness scenes, rivers, lakes, architecture, city views, portraits and figures in landscapes. His success was as a painter of the “impressionist school”  who painted prolifically from about 1925 to 1965 mostly in the Muskoka area, Lake Superior, Georgian Bay and Thunder Bay and exhibited in many places in Ontario.

Shaw made several painting trips to the Rocky Mountains. As shown in this pair of paintings  “B.C. Rocky Mountain Landscapes” his impressionist style, has a great sophistication of colour. The paintings are a pair in that one is the “birds eye view” showing amazing depth of the landscape, while the other is a “close up” view of the same mountains with the same impressionistic brushstrokes and colouration.  Both paintings are dramatic, where you feel the strong presence of mountains rising up from the dense forests against snowy outcroppings. Both paintings are signed by the artist on the front right with handwritten pencil notes on the reverse of one: “Stuart Clifford Shaw, One of the Sisters B.C. Rocky Mtns, CA 1940”. Matching guilt wood frames with linen matts are in good condition.

His works were featured in solo and group exhibitions at prominent commercial galleries such as Redpath’s Galleries, Toronto (1936 – 1945); Robert Simpson Galleries, Toronto (1938); Nash Galleries, London, Ontario (1939); Scott Gallery, Hamilton (1940 – 1945); Eaton’s Fine Art Gallery, Toronto (1942); and, Carroll Fine Arts Gallery, Toronto (1945 – 1950). Posthumously, in 2023 his works were included in the permanent collections of the Archives of Ontario in Toronto, Peel Art Gallery Museum Archives and the University of Toronto Art Collection.
