Canadian Landscape Painter Clifton Wellington Greer (1904-1986), Oil Painting on Masonite Board “Autumn Morning”

Clifton Wellington Greer (1904-1986) was born in Toronto. He studied art at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) under great artists like: Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald of the famous Canadian “Group of Seven”, L.A.C. Panton, Frederick Haines, etc. The focus of his works are landscape oil paintings.

Presented here, “Autumn Morning” depicts a fall “colours” lakeside scene of sophisticated and highly textural yellow and red cadmiums against the cool water and evergreen spruce and pine forests Canada is famous for. The gorgeous sun lite cloudy sky shows tremendous movement in the brushwork where you can feel there must have been  a “breeze” in the air . Likely painted “En Plein Air”  similar to the onsite techniques of the Group of Seven. The painting is signed front lower right “Clifton Greer” and the back shows the artist signed the title written in pencil. The generous handsome frame is in keeping with the time period of the work.

Clifton Greer believed that “a great painting, should hold the mirror up to life, reflecting an enhanced beauty, i.e. truth without distortion.”  He held exhibitions in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and other parts of Canada where “he is recognized throughout the country for his magnificent Canadian landscapes.”

Painting signed lower right.  Title on the back.
