Canadian Oil on Masonite – Peter Stoyan (1900-1979) – “Cottages” dated 1956

An oil on masonite work, “Cottages” depicts a view of small houses or cottages near Bracebridge Ontario on a sunny summer day in a sophisticated colour palette by Peter Stoyan (né Stoyanoff ) a Greek/Canadian painter (1900-1979). Stoyan emigrated to Canada in 1914 and studied art in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art, under George Reid, J. W. Beatty, Fred Haines and Arthur Lismer.

Beginning in the 1920’s Stoyan traveled quite extensively and exhibited both his landscapes and city views during this time. Around 1930 Peter Stoyan visited New York City. He exhibited there for several years and worked mainly as an illustrator. His work from this early period is signed either, ‘Stoyanoff’ (his real name) or ‘Stoin’. He then returned to Toronto and began signing his work, ‘Peter Stoyan’. He remained there for most of his career, with the exception that he both lived and worked in the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia during the 1950’s and early 1960’s. During the decade of the 1960’s Peter Stoyan created a number of etchings, linocuts and monoprints with either representational or abstract elements.

Peter Stoyan was an Associate of the Ontario College of Art (O.A.C.A.). The Ontario Society of Artists (O.S.A.)and the Royal Canadian Academy both began to include his works in their exhibitions from 1925.
