Cosmopolitan and Glamorous French Art Deco Art Glass Vase by Marius-Ernest Sabino (1878-1961), Paris “Hirondelles” or “Swallow Birds”, c. 1928

French Art Deco art glass vase by Marius-Ernest Sabino (1878-1961).  He was an Italian-born Parisian, who attended L’Ecole National des Arts Decoratifs and the Beaux Arts de Paris. He won numerous prizes in Europe for his art and was awarded the Knight of the Legion d’Honneur for his contributions to French art and industry.

Sabino experimented with glass and by 1925 he had created his own chemical formula for opalescent glass. Sabino glass is a now a type of art glass category renowned for opalescent effects and art deco designs. Sabino glass is famous for its milky, iridescent effect, often with blue or golden honey coloured hues.

This eternally chic Sabino art glass vase showcases the characteristic geometric shapes and motifs of the Art Deco period, namely the “setting sun” and flying “hirondelles” or translated “swallow birds” images. The subtle honey yellow coloured pressed glass with satin finish is in excellent condition, circa 1928 and engraved to the base : Sabino Paris France 

Sabino was part of a robust tradition of French creators, like Rene Lalique and Émile Gallé, that became a signature of Art Nouveau the turn of the 20th century and who then pivoted to embrace the geometric style of Art Deco.
