Early 19th Century English Walnut Hall Chair

Modern collectors and decorators love hall chairs and they are making a comeback. These chairs are highly adaptable to all types of décor because they are often simple in form. Hall chairs were originally used as seats in a house’s main hall to accommodate those waiting to enter into the more intimate spaces. Crafted out of solid wood with straight backs, hall chairs were traditionally placed against the walls. Today they are placed flanking a console or a commode in the entryway of a house or apartment and also look beautiful in a room as extra seating or as a “side table” to a sofa. This sturdy chair is likely “from England” and a very good historical example of a hall chair. Circa 1880.
