18th Century Large Hand Coloured Engraving – After Guido Reni (1575-1642) – “Bacchus & Ariadne” by Jakob Frey (1681-1752)Art
An early hand coloured engraving circa 1727 by Jakob Frey (Swiss 1681-1752) – after a painting by Guido Reni (Bologna, Italy 1575-1642).
Muse Bacchus crowns Ariadne with a star crown. He throws the crown to the sky, where it becomes the constellation. The engraving depicts the wedding of Bacchus and Ariadne Bacchus.
Another hangs in the Indianapolis Museum of Art which is dated 1727. The hand colouring on this most likely done at a later date.
Framed in a gilt wood plain frame.
A very nice large size for decorating.
