English George Jones – Majolica Ceramics – Sardine Box with Turquoise Ground

A gorgeous example of Victorian British Majolica Ceramics by George Jones c1861-1873. The Sardine Box lid has a myriad layers of seaweed upon which are 3 realistically modelled sardines. The base of the box consists of a beautiful turquoise ground and frieze of vertical seaweed spikes. The inside of both the lid and box is in a lovely soft lilac/pink ground. The George Jones stamp CJ is on the “marbled marine coloured” base. A great example of George Jones whose works vie with Minton and Wedgewood for some of the best Victorian Majolica ever produced.
