Silver HollowareGEORGE III Sterling Silver Tankard by John Langlands II English Hallmarked Newcastle-on-Tyne circa 1796
This is a very handsome sterling silver tankard/mug from the period of George III, Newcastle-0n-Tyne, England. It has a typical baluster shape with a swelling out of the body near the foot, the handle is hollow with a opening in the bottom to allow easy handling of both cold and hot drinks. It is unadorned except for the monogrammed letters W.M.C.
Measures: 5 1/4 inches high x 5 1/4 inches wide (includes handle).
Hallmarked: I & L for John Langlands II, Crowned Leopard Head, Assay mark Lion passant denoting .925 Sterling Silver, the duty mark of the Sovereign’s head of George III and the mark of three towers for Newcastle-on-Tyne. The combination of these marks date this piece circa 1796.
Excellent Condition: This tankard is over 200 years old and has a indent on the top of the handle where the drinker’s thumb would go as you lift your drink. It has a few tiny blemishes on the top rim and the body but nothing major of note, I have tried to photograph this piece well and encourage inquiries to answer any questions you may have.
