Multifunctional use and often called a “dumbwaiter”. In the 18th century, in wealthy households, conversations and gossip during dinner parties were often sensitive and private. Servants waiting at the table could easily overhear these discussions and potentially spread secrets. The term was later applied to the small mechanical service lifts (miniature elevators) used to transport food and dishes between floors, as they similarly performed a “waiter’s” duty discreetly and without making a noise or listening to conversations.
