v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vHenri-Michel-Antoine Chapu (French, 1833-1891) bronze plaque mounted to rouge marble. Titled ‘La Pensee’. Signed H. Chapu and holds the Thiebaut Freres Fondeurs foundry mark. High-relief bronze “La Pensée”, signed by the French sculptor Henri Chapu, a prolific and recognized artist under the Second Empire. His works were notably published by the largest foundries of the time, such as that of the Thiébaut Frères, whose stamp adorns the left side.
An allegorical figure of “Thought”, in the guise of a young woman wearing an elegant antique drape, and holding a parchment in her hand. At her feet are books and a pen, attributes related to reading and writing. We can guess behind her a bust of Minerva, the Roman deity of wisdom and intelligence. This bronze is mounted on a rouge marble base veined with white. This delicate work will enchant you with the finesse of its details and the quality of its realization. Late 19th century.
