There is a rich history of English writing boxes, also known as a writing slope or lap desk. These portable writing desks were essential for both personal and professional use, especially during a time when travel and correspondence were becoming increasingly important. By the late 18th century, mahogany was the preferred material due to its durability and attractive appearance. These boxes were designed not only to be both functional and stylish but personal, unlike a writing desk or table. They were used by military officers, travellers and writers, providing a portable “working” solution. These boxes were not only practical but also a symbol of status and intellectual pursuit.
To be sure, a fascinating piece of history that reflects the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail of its makers, a timeless piece ready to be admired and used.
