Large British Oil on Canvas by Arthur Winter Shaw 1869-1948, Untitled Interior Scene of “Mother & Child Sewing”
ArtBritish painter Arthur Winter Shaw (1869-1948) was born in Peckham England, the son of a clerk to the War Office. He studied at Westminster School of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and in Paris. He moved to Amberley in Sussex around 1904, where he became a part of a vibrant artistic community founded by Edward Scott. Shaw was inspired by Edward Scott’s “atmospheric” and “twilight” paintings as evidenced in this work by Shaw of an interior scene with the gentle illumination of the central figures “mother and child sewing”. The sophisticated play of firelight casts a warm shadow on the peripheral figure framing a triangular composition in shape and colour that holds the “eye” to examine the central story unfolding, a frozen moment in time. Artist signature is on the front lower right and name plaque on the wood frame center front.
Shaw became a regular and successful exhibitor at many private and public galleries in London and across the provinces, where his work was well received for their unique interpretation of nature and light. His involvement in the artistic scene during this period contributed to his recognition as a talented painter within the broader British art community.
In excellent condition, this is one of Shaw’s masterful works, showing his amazing talent in rendering light as a dramatic effect.
