Large, Distinctive Moorcroft, Made in England & Potter to the Queen, Flambé Orchid Vase circa 1930/1940
PotteryThe Moorcroft flambé Orchid vase, a highly sought-after collectible, featuring the distinctive “flambe” glaze technique. William Moorcroft, the founder of the Moorcroft pottery brand, pioneered the use of flambé glazes. His work with this technique, which harks back to 17th-century Chinese porcelain, was highly regarded, and he is credited with bringing it to new heights. Known for its fiery and unpredictable colours, the flambe technique was particularly favoured by William Moorcroft and later his son, Walter.
The Orchid pattern, a popular design, showcases a range of reds, yellows, pinks, and greens on a dark red background, a result of the higher firing temperatures needed for the flambé glaze. The flowers on this example are brilliant red cadmium tones with deep greens against a dark “flambe” ground, and is signed to the base in blue “W. Moorcroft”, with impressed facsimile signature and “Potter to the Queen” label. Marks date between 1928-1949. Signed in blue by Walter Moorcroft.
This gorgeous example of a “Moorcroft Flambé Orchid” vase, is highly sought after by collectors due to its quality, artistry, and historical significance.
