Magnificent and Palatial French Napoleon III “Pareclose” or “Cushion” Mirror, Original Beveled Glass, Guilt Scrolls/Floral Garlands , 47″ Tall, Circa Mid 19th Century

“Cushion mirrors” (also known as miroirs au coussin in French) from the Napoleon III period (circa 1850-1870s) are highly sought-after, and characterized by a central beveled mirror plate surrounded by a frame made up of smaller, angled mirror sections. The specific design of this mirror, with eight distinct mirror panels (known as parecloses), adds to the complexity and value over simpler single-pane cushion mirrors. The term “pillow” or “cushion” refers to this distinctive, raised, and often ornate, multi-paneled frame design, rather than a soft textile item.   Oval-centered cushion mirrors with eight surrounding mirror panels are less common than their fully rectangular counterparts, making this design a desirable style of the antique French “cushion” or “pareclose” mirror, sometimes referred to as a “gate cushion” design.

The magnificent size, presence of the original 19th-century beveled mercury glass and gilt scrolls/floral motif details all add to the “palatial statement” of this piece. A rare and very special historical example in excellent original condition meant for completing a luxurious interior whether it be a modern or classic space.
