Magnificent French Art Nouveau Bowl Signed Daum Nancy, Acid-Cut Cameo Glass with Thistle Motifs, French Sterling Silver Mounts (.950), Circa 1898-1905

An exceptional Art Nouveau bowl by Daum of Nancy, signed to the base “Daum Nancy” with the Cross of Lorraine, and mounted in French sterling silver of .950 purity. Measuring 10.25 inches in diameter, this refined example dates to circa 1898–1905, during the firm’s celebrated early period.

The bowl is formed in luminous opalescent glass with subtle ivory and pale celadon tonal variations. The surface is decorated with finely carved thistles and foliage executed in relief using Daum’s renowned acid-cut cameo technique. To achieve this effect, layers of contrasting glass were fused together during the blowing process. A resist was applied to define the design, and the piece was immersed in acid baths that dissolved selected outer layers of glass. The protected areas remained raised, creating dimensional botanical decoration that was then refined through wheel carving and satin finishing. The warm highlights visible in the carving are natural optical effects created by light interacting with layered glass, not applied paint or gilding.

The rim is mounted in French sterling silver (.950), a higher silver purity than British .925 standard. French sterling is marked with the Minerva head hallmark and accompanied by a maker’s punch. The sculpted mount features flowing foliate ornament consistent with the Art Nouveau aesthetic, reflecting the integrated decorative arts tradition in France at the turn of the twentieth century.

Founded in 1878, Daum of Nancy became one of the leading glasshouses of the French Art Nouveau movement. Working within the artistic circle known as the École de Nancy, the firm championed the unity of fine art and craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from natural forms. By the late 1890s, Daum had perfected acid-cut cameo glass and gained international recognition for its refined carving, nuanced coloration, and sculptural restraint. The script signature with the Cross of Lorraine confirms production during this prime period.

The thistle motif exemplifies the Art Nouveau fascination with stylized yet botanically expressive natural subjects. The combination of layered cameo glass and period French sterling mount elevates this bowl beyond a decorative object, embodying the era’s commitment to harmonious design across materials.

The bowl remains in excellent overall condition, a highly collectible and elegant example of Daum Nancy French Art Nouveau glass and silver craftsmanship.
