Magnificent Georgian Sterling Silver & Gilt Table Snuff Box for Jacob Borch by Silversmith Thomas Shaw – English Hallmarked, Birmingham 1826
Gift Ideas, Silver HollowareA gorgeous sterling silver and gilt table snuff box with English hallmarks for Thomas Shaw, Birmingham 1826. The box has a beautifully detailed pattern on the top of the lid and a swirl pattern around the rim and on the exterior of the bottom section of the box.
The cartouche in the centre of the hinged lid is monogrammed “JB” for “Jacob Borch”. On the inside of the lid is an inscription, written in Norwegian. The translation reads: To Mr Reittmester (Cavalry Captain) Jacob Borch as a token of appreciation from the Heirs of Copenhagen” . Jacob Borch (1813-1886) was an important Norwegian merchant and later politician holding key positions in the Drammen City Council and Banking Committee. In 1860 he was sent by the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) to the coronation of Charles III in Stockholm. On the underside of the lid and on the bottom of the inside of the box are the hallmarks.
Held in the hand, this magnificent box has beautiful quality overall, large and heavy with historical significance. Truly a unique collectors piece.
