Marvellous & Rare English “Shapland & Petter” Arts & Crafts Large Hall Mirror/ Hat & Coat Rack with Stunning British Art Nouveau Floral Marquetry, Mahogany & Inlaid Satinwood with Spectacular Brass Hardware, c.1900–1910
FurnitureShapland & Petter of Barnstaple, Devon were one of the key English firms producing Art Nouveau–influenced furniture around the turn of the 20th century. The contrasting woods of mahogany with satinwood inlay are stylized designs of symmetrical elongated flower forms and flowing tendrils, a great example of British Art Nouveau and extremely consistent with Shapland & Petter designs. Brass hooks with organic curves and sinuous shapes also reflect the British Art Nouveau style.
This is a very special rare example of the peak Shapland & Petter period where we see the Arts & Crafts emphasis on craftsmanship, solid construction and functional domestic form combined with Art Nouveau influences of stylized botanical motifs, flowing organic symmetry and decorative inlay rather than heavy carving. A blend of British Art Nouveau with Arts & Crafts ideals.
