Masterful Large British Pastoral/Mountainous Landscape of “North Wales”, Oil on Canvas, Late 19th Century
v** SOLD ARCHIVES **vCirca Late 19th century, large oil on canvas indistinguishably signed on the front lower right beneath the frame, and marked on the reverse “North Wales” with a “Christie’s” auction house sticker. This large wonderful painting depicts a landscape pastoral scene with cattle grazing on the edge of a river in a mountainous landscape is consistent with views found in North Wales. Several prominent British landscape painters focused on pastoral scenes in North Wales during the late 19th century, particularly around the Llugwy River in the Snowdonia area.
The incredible attention to detail in the foreground, the depth and atmosphere of the mountainous horizon, captures the viewer and draws you in where you can imagine wading in the river and touching the plants in the foreground. The luxurious historical frame is in very good condition and likely original. Truly a masterful work.
