Mid 19th Century English Oak Fire Screen with Hand Carved Scene – Lady Godiva & Peeping Tom
FurnitureA rustic & very well done hand carving of the story of Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom – carved into a large oak panel – of a fire screen. The panel tilts back and forth and is supported by two heavy oak columns on either side. There are no screws or nails – the piece is put together all with dowels.
The carving of Lady Godiva in the thick oak panel matches that of the stone carved statue by John Thomas in 1861 at the Maidstone Museum.
The story of Lady Godiva goes back to the 11th century but was re-popularized in the mid-19th century.
This screen dates circa 1861+
