Mid Century Modern American Industrial Holophane Pair of ‘Reflector-Refractor’ Prismatic Glass Pendant Lights, Circa 1940
Art Glass / Crystal, LightingBeautifully formed pair of pendant lights by Holophane, a manufacturer of lighting products founded in 1898 in London England. The company is a UK based and USA manufacturer of lighting fixtures for commercial, industrial, outdoor, and emergency applications. Interesting fact, Holophane secured the largest-ever single lighting order in the UK of 65,000 fittings, covering 186 miles of tunnels in the London Underground. Holophane has provided some 80 years of service to the London Underground in total.
The hallmark of Holophane luminaires is the borosilicate glass reflector/refractor. The prisms created within the glass provide a combination of uplight and downlight to illuminate any environment evenly without creating dark spots or glare.
These mid century vintage pair lights are marked with the name “Holophane” and have a modern industrial twist. The prismatic double holophane shade is held together by a bottom finial and a top pewter-finished circular metal bracket and post. They look absolutely stunning when lit and refract the light very evenly which was one of the Holophane company’s claims to fame. Each piece is designed to refract light impeccably, casting a warm, diffused glow that enriches any room with a classic, yet contemporary ambiance.
A great modern industrial look for any kitchen or dining room.
