Opulent with Refined Elegance: A Pair of French “Louis XVI Revival” Urn/Table Lamps in “Breche Violette” Marble and Gilt Bronze Mounts, Circa 1850–1875 | Electrified Mid-20th Century
General, LightingAn opulent and elegant pair of mid 19th-century French “Louis XVI Revival” urns in gorgeous violet marble with gilt bronze mounts, later professionally converted into table lamps in the mid 20th century.
Each urn is crafted in richly figured “purple breccia” Italian marble with dramatic natural veining in tones of violet and cream. The bodies are mounted with finely cast ormolu acanthus-scroll handles, draped floral garlands, ribbon-and-bow collar mounts, and classical leaf ornament. They rest upon matching violet marble plinth bases.
The urns date to the mid-19th century and reflect the enduring popularity of Louis XVI neoclassical design during the Second Empire period. In the mid-20th century, the urns were thoughtfully converted into lamps and fitted with dual-light sockets for functional illumination. The added wooden plinth base and wiring are consistent with quality 1940–1960 conversions. They are currently paired with custom painted violet and gilt shades with gilt interior detailing that complement the warmth of the gilt bronze mounts.
Elegant and versatile, these lamps offer two kinds of luxury: 19th-century Neoclassical craftsmanship and timeless decorative and functional appeal.
