Pair of Napoleon III Sevres Portrait Plates, 1860, Mdme Pompadour / Marat

This pair of Sèvres porcelain portrait plates has scalloped, cobalt blue rims, overlaid with raised dentelle gilt and gilt trim along the outer edges. The centres of the plates feature hand-painted, signed portraits: one of Madame Pompadour, the other, of Prince Marat, on white backgrounds and framed by a fine gold band.

The portraits are signed by the artist “Muville” in the lower, left hand corner.

Each plate has three backstamps: A crowned eagle in black, a crowned “N” indicating patronage by court of Napoleon III and the factory mark in the centre M. Imp (le) de Sevres, in use until 1870.
