Early 19th Century European Oil Painting Of Woman and Children
This is a finely rendered oil painting by an unknown artist depicting a woman and her two small children seeking sanctuary from an approaching storm. Her daughter buries her face in her skirts and covers her eyes as the babe in arms looks over his mother’s shoulder, as the woman bends on one knee in supplication, poised to knock on a heavy wooden door. In the background, a cross stands on the edge of a wooded path, leading through the mountains. The sky above is dark and stormy. The little girl’s scarf appears to be blown by the wind. The canvas has been re-lined and the frame is 20th century.
