Rare & Grand 19th Century Victorian Rococo Revival Screen, Impressive Biblical Needlepoint Tapestry Framed in a Monumental Ebonized Hand-Carved Wood Screen, Circa 1850-1880
FurnitureThis is a magnificent and rare 19th-century “Victorian Rococo Revival” screen and tapestry of impressive proportions. The central textile depicts the biblical King David in a lush, classically rendered landscape. King David is in his later years, identified by his signature harp. He is shown in a lush classically rendered landscape, being attended to by two female figures traditionally interpreted as Bathsheba and Abishag. The needlepoint artistry is exceptionally fine, with a rich palette and expressive detailing in the figures’ faces and garments.
The original monumental ebonized hand-carved wood frame is a masterpiece of the Rococo Revival style, boasting deep, high-relief “C” and “S” scrolls, floral sprays, and acanthus leaf motifs. The sophisticated matte dark finish provides a striking contrast to the vibrant needlework. Despite its grand scale, the frame is surprisingly lightweight, suggesting an ebonized fruitwood or pine—a hallmark of high-quality Victorian decorative arts.
