Stunning Burled Walnut Victorian Sutherland Table, Rectangular Drop Leaf Design , English Late 19th Century
FurnitureOutstanding Victorian era, burled walnut drop leaf Sutherland table. Two drop leaves with a rectangular shaped edge, are supported by elegant central turned baluster-form columns with two swing out gate legs and standing on attractive scroll feet with original porcelain castors. Called a “Sutherland” table which is described as a compact, Victorian-era folding table with a narrow centre and two large, drop-down leaves that create a generous surface when extended, named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland; it’s known for its space-saving design, often used for tea service or games, featuring gate legs, turned supports, and typically made from walnut or mahogany with elegant casters.
Having a wonderful quality burr walnut top, the table is in excellent condition. Fully extended it is surprisingly large and sturdy as these tables were originally used to hold a full tea service which would include cups, saucers and tea pot. They were also used for games playing and writing for the Victorian Lady.
A very versatile table and an absolutely stunning example of burled walnut patina.
