Sublime KPM Large Hand Painted Porcelain Plaque by R. Dittrich, Mother & Baby, “In Your Eyes My Heaven Lies”, Berlin, Late 19th Century
Art, PorcelainsLarge and sublimely beautiful, this KPM hand painted porcelain plaque is titled “In Deinem Auge Liegt Mein Himmel”, translated “In Your Eyes My Heaven Lies”. An ethereal interior scene with a mother standing by an open window coddling her baby in a “christening dress”. The plaque is signed on the front lower right ‘R. Dittrich’. Dittrich was a famous porcelain painter working in Austria and Germany during the 19th century. The back has impressed “K.P.M.” with a scepter mark above “H”, inscribed in German “In Deiem Auge Liegt mein Himmel” and with a blue Royal Vienna beehive mark. This large plaque is in excellent condition with an elegant gilt frame.
KPM had an entire department in the 19th century dedicated to copying “Old master ” & German paintings onto porcelain and these would become extremely popular, high quality, ceramic paintings among the growing consumer class. The bigger the plaque, the more technically complex it was to produce, and so the more valuable it was.
