Hanau Silver was named for the German city where since the 16th century it was a centre of precious metal working, with many gold and silver smiths. At that time there were no guild or hallmark laws in Hanau, but much of the antique reproduction silver was made there well into the 19th century. Craftsmanship and knowledge of period styles is distinctive in the intricate repose work where many Hanau objects feature hammering from the reverse side to create raised detailed designs on the front. These sculptural elements are often of mythological or allegorical figures, foliage, flowers, and animals.
Although the Dutch and French produced miniatures, many may have been produced as Hanau continental sterling silver 930 in Germany featuring similar whimsical designs. During the French Revolution 1789/1789 , most of the artistic silver was destroyed so the Germans started making replicas in Continental 930 sterling silver. The hallmarks added were replicas of the original French and Dutch hallmarks. Hanau marks aren’t registered trademarks but the mere reproduction of ancient silver hallmarks.
