Superb New York Tiffany Floriform / Favrile Art Glass “Lily” Vase, Circa 1895-1910

Superb Tiffany art glass “flower-form” vase from the period of 1895-1910 is a beautiful example of Tiffany’s “favrile” glass production. Tiffany’s signature glass, Favrile, was patented in 1894 and was characterized by its iridescent, multicolored surface. This was achieved by exposing molten glass to metallic oxides during the glass-blowing process.

Tiffany found inspiration in nature for both the colours and shapes of his vases where some mimick the shape of a flower, with the stem, leaves, and petals of a lily as seen in this example which also employs another popular type of Tiffany favrile glass “technique” featuring “Aventurine glass threads” pulled to mimic peacock feathers.  The ribbed and domed circular foot, heavily iridized in gold, supports a slender “leaf green stem” with a lower white and green “knop”.  This green stem extends to the large “lily” pink ruffled and undulating bowl with “green leaf-like feathers” and an interior crackled gold iridescence .
