Art Glass / Crystal, LightingCharles Schneider (1881-1953) was an Art Deco glass artist, born in 1881 in Chateau-Thierry, near Paris. Schneider at an early age moved to Nancy, one of the most important artistic cities in France at that time. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and later in 1904, he went to the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied painting and medal engraving. From 1906, he regularly exhibited in the Engraving section of the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais and he was twice awarded a prize.
After the First World War, Schneider had the opportunity to blow artistic glass and became a key glass artist in the French Art Deco movement, particularly known for his lamps and vases. His creations were highly sought after during the Art Deco era as he developed a unique technique using pulverized glass and metal oxides to create a wide range of colours in his pieces. Schneider’s glassworks were part of a larger family business, and while the factory faced challenges after the Wall Street crash of 1929, his work continued to be admired and sought after, being sold in prestigious department stores and high-end art shops.
A stunning table lamp of timeless Art Deco design by a famous French artist that integrates well into any style of interior from classic to contemporary with the added bonus that Schneider’s pieces are highly valued, particularly by collectors.
