Unusual French Miniature Bronze Dore “Pendule de Voyage” / Travel Clock by “Joyeria Rossello” Montevideo Paris, Circa 1874

A French bronze dore “pendule de voyage”  also known as a “carriage clock,” is a small, portable, spring-driven clock designed for travel, particularly by carriage or horseback. Developed in France and played a role in the lives of the “wealthy” in the 19th century, who apparently travelled extensively. Also known for their ornate bronze dore (gilded bronze), intricate details and leather travel cases.

The 3.0 cm clock face has Arabic numerals, a separate second hand, signed “Joyeria Rossello” “Montevideo” and lays recessed beneath bevelled glass. All raised up, in high relief, on a gilt surround beautifully detailed in bronze dore to look like a miniature version of a large scale mantle clock with “bow and wreath” motifs on a “3D” column pedestal with a “heavy trim textured” base.

The movement is likely driven by a spring barrel and an eight day duration. The metal dore back plate is anchored by 4 screws. The base is numbered 23 and stamped “AN PARIS”. The key marked Sept 1874 and handsome leather travel case stamped with the maker ” Joyeria A. Rossello Montevideo” has brass hinges and clasp closure.

This rare French bronze “pendule de voyage” clock is a valuable and historically significant piece, reflecting the height of artistry and craftsmanship of the 19th century. These clocks were designed for luxurious travel, providing a very elegant way to keep time on the move even for today….
