Watercolour of “British Columbia Lake Scene” by British/Canadian Artist Emily Warren, Dated 1929

A strong example of Canadian, west coast pristine British Columbia landscape, in this watercolour of a “B.C. Lake Scene” by Emily Mary Bibbens Warren (1869 – 1956). She was a well documented British/Canadian artist and illustrator. She worked in ink, watercolour, oil, gouache and graphite. Her favourite subjects included gardens, landscape, interiors (especially the light through stained glass) and exteriors of buildings. Warren was educated in Britain in architecture, art and science and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1887 at the age of 18, then receiving her Art Masters Certificate in 1889.

She moved to Canada in 1919 and lived in Ottawa Ontario initially, relocating to Montreal Quebec from 1928 to 1934. Warren was commissioned to do two large oil paintings of the “Great War”, as Canadian Tribute paintings in 1921 and they are in the Canadian War Museum to this day.

In her final years she travelled and painted in British Columbia, Belgium Scotland and France. The subject of this watercolour “B.C. Lake Scene” shows her amazing talent of crystallizing light and water, a moment in the wilderness. She exhibited in England and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Old Dudley Arts Society, the Aberdeen Society of Arts, the Society of Women Artists and the Committee for Preservation of Memorials in London. Warren lectured in Canada in the 1920s and in the 1930s she illustrated & hand coloured glass slides reproducing her own work.  Eight hundred of these glass slides are in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto, along with an extensive collection of correspondence, lecture notes, and biographical material. There is demand for her work in Canada, England and continental Europe.
