Delicate French Art Glass – Daum Nancy Pine Cones & Scenic Landscape – Narrow Neck Cameo Glass & Enamelled Vase – 15.5 inches, Late 1890s

Delicate Daum Nancy pine cone scenic “art glass” vase of the late 1890s. The bulbous base has a baluster shaped stem, that is long, tapering to a slightly flared neck. Stunning decoration of cameo glass and enamelled pine cones and barren branches that drape down from the rim to overhang the lake scene. Set against an acid-textured or “mottled” background is a sophisticated painted enamelled scene, with a subdued colour combination of  “lakeland trees” at the base to a “faint pink” horizon above the lake. Signed in enamel on the side of vase “Daum Nancy” and Cross of Lorraine.

The Daum family worked at the beginning of the Art Nouveau era and created one of France’s most prominent glassworks. Established at the end of the 19th century, Daum’s renown was originally linked to the École de Nancy. During the Universal Exhibition of 1900 Daum was awarded a ‘Grand Prix’ medal. The Daum brothers soon became a major force in the Art Nouveau movement, seriously rivalling Gallé, so much so that when Émile Gallé died in 1904 they became the leaders in the field of decorative glass.
