Wonderful & Rare British Georgian Sterling Silver Pair of Chambersticks with Conical Extinguishers by Renowned Silversmiths John Crouch II & Thomas Hannam – Dated 1801

These are a wonderful pair of Georgian sterling silver chambersticks complete with original conical extinguishers and removable sconce nozzles. Thomas Hannam completed his apprenticeship to John Café in 1761 and went into partnership with John Crouch I in 1765. The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters. John Crouch II & Thomas Hannam formed a partnership in 1799 – 1807.

Chambersticks were the ancestor of the flashlight and were a very common object in the great houses of the eighteenth century. The English call it “Chamberstick”, the candlestick to go to the bedroom. These chambersticks are always accompanied by a snuffer that is placed on the candle to prevent the smell of smoke from the wick that has just been extinguished.  Chambersticks lit the way as you moved around the house at night, and these chamber candlesticks are dish-shaped to catch any spilled wax and have removable nozzles to ease the cleaning of the spent wax. A full set of hallmarks is located to the underside of the base of both pieces and all component parts are equally marked. A crest of a “stag” is engraved on all pieces symbolizing strength, nobility and guardianship.

These rare Georgian sterling silver chambersticks are in excellent condition with a great patina for timeless utility.
