Monumental & Exquisite English Dated 1830 “Cusp of George IV & WilliamIV” Sterling Silver Tea Service of 4 Pieces and Tray by Renowned Silversmiths Edward, Edward Jr, John & William Barnard, Total Weight 9 Kilos

This exceptional George IV / William IV sterling silver tea and coffee service represents a monumental achievement in nineteenth-century British silversmithing. Crafted in 1830 by the legendary firm of Edward Barnard & Sons, this set bears the distinguished marks of partners Edward Barnard, Edward Barnard Jr, John Barnard, and William Barnard. It is a definitive example of the “Grand Florid” style that defined the era’s luxury. Each piece is constructed of remarkably heavy-gauge silver, featuring the signature “melon” or “pumpkin” lobed bodies that were highly coveted by the British aristocracy.

The decorative brilliance of the set is showcased through masterful repoussé work, where the silver has been intricately hammered from the reverse to create high-relief, three-dimensional ornamentation. These exuberant hand-chased and repoussé floral and foliate scrolls envelop each vessel, providing a rich texture that is further adorned with intricately cast floral finials and ornate handles. The sugar and creamer retain their opulent original vermeil gold wash interiors, adding a layer of warmth and sophistication to the service.

An engraved family crest appears within the central cartouche of each piece. The crest depicts a “heraldic bird”, a custom detail that confirms the set was commissioned for a family of high social standing and adds significant historical provenance to the service. While one side proudly displays this heraldry, the reverse cartouche remains blank, preserving the original integrity of the design and allowing for future personalization.

The service is anchored by a massive and majestic presentation tray that brings the total weight of the collection to a staggering nine kilograms. The tray alone accounts for six and a half kilograms of this weight, serving as a testament to the uncompromising quality of the commission. Its broad surface is decorated with a sophisticated program of flat-chased foliate engraving and delicate diapering patterns, all framed by a heavily cast border of shells and scrolling acanthus leaves. Resting on four robustly cast scroll feet, the tray provides an imposing and stately foundation for the four-piece service.

This palatial set is not only a functional masterwork but also a rare investment-grade heirloom reflecting the peak of the Barnard workshop’s prestige during the 1830s.
