Stunning Victorian Sterling Silver Fish Serving Set & Case By Dobson and Sons Piccadilly, Silversmiths Harrison Brothers and Howson Sheffield 1894 & 1895
Silver HollowareThis exceptional late Victorian solid sterling silver two-piece fish serving set represents the pinnacle of late nineteenth-century British silversmithing and luxury dining. This set boasts elite dual-provenance, marrying the industrial mastery of Sheffield with the luxury retail market of London’s West End. The silver bears the official hallmark stamps for the renowned firm Harrison Brothers & Howson. Crafted during an era of celebrated production, the quality reflects the high standard that earned the company a coveted Royal Warrant. The set was originally commissioned by and retailed through Dobson & Sons, the prestigious diamond merchants and silversmiths operating from their exclusive storefront at 32 Piccadilly, London, catering strictly to the wealthy elite and nobility of the late-Victorian era.
The design features a wide serving knife and a coordinating four-tine fork, both showcasing breathtaking artistry. The silver faces are adorned with intricate openwork piercing, masterfully combined with delicate bright-cut foliate and floral engravings. These elaborate structural elements transition beautifully into heavy, weighted sterling silver handles embellished with scrolled acanthus motifs and classic Albany pattern flourishes that offer superb balance and hand feel.
The silver pieces bear their own distinct official British hallmarks, including the crown town mark for the Sheffield Assay Office, the lion passant standard mark, the definitive HH maker’s mark and the corresponding cycle date letters. The serving fork displays a lowercase letter b indicating it was assayed in 1894, while the serving knife displays a lowercase letter c indicating it was assayed in 1895. Beautifully for over a century, the set is housed in its original custom-fit hard-shell presentation case. The interior retains its vibrant, luxurious purple velvet and silk lining, complete with the elegant gold-embossed royal retailer stamp for Dobson and Sons on the inner lid. This monumental duo weighs a substantial 369 grams.
This rare, historic investment-quality set is in excellent condition, ready to serve as a stunning example for any high-end silver collection and just adds a touch of luxury to a luxurious dining table.
