Museum Quality English Britannia Hallmarked Silver (.958) Large Lidded Beer / Wine Jug – by Carrington & Co – dated 1922 – English Arts & Crafts Design.

A museum quality Britannia Silver covered cup (or stein) with decorative handle and hinged lid and small spout for serving beer or wine.  The body is entirely hammered and the lid has an English Arts & Crafts design.   The piece is stamped with English Britannia silver hallmarks – meaning the quality of Britiannia silver is .958 (as opposed to Sterling silver is .925).  The piece is quite thick and heavy and is of exceptional quality.

The maker is John Bodman Carrington – Carrington & Co.

John Bodman Carrington embarked on his career as a skilled silversmith and jeweler. His professional journey began at G. R. Collins & Co, a renowned Birmingham firm located at 130 Regent Street in London. In 1880, he, along with his partners John Carrington, William Carrington Smith, and George Budford, established an incorporated company and registered their first mark at the esteemed Goldsmiths Hall in London.
