18th Century Strasbourg France Porcelain Faience “Courting Couple” Pair of Figures by Joseph Hannong

,

This impressive faience figural pair was created in the late eighteenth century in Strasbourg France at the pottery factory run by Joseph Hannong. Hallmarked on the underside with the Strasbourg factory mark ( H over the number “39” painted in blue). Large square bases like this were typical for the factory.

Modeled as a young courting couple, the young man gesturing toward and seems to be “in conversation” with the girl who looks toward him while carrying flowers that she has picked in her apron.

Strasbourg Faience is represented in museums around the world including several pieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Remarkably good condition for pieces from this period. The only flaw is some typical glaze wear to high points in places.

Dimensions: male figure height 7.5″ x width 2.75″ x depth 3.5″,  female figure height 7.5″ x width 3.5″ x depth 3.5″
