19thC French Gothic Revival Brass Church Lectern with Champlevé Enamel Saint Medallions & Glass Bezel Set Red & Green Cabochons Jewels, Circa 1880–1890

This exceptional late nineteenth century French Gothic Revival altar missal stand represents a magnificent example of ecclesiastical craftsmanship. Designed primarily as a church thabor or book rest for liturgical use, the piece is expertly constructed from heavy gilded brass that has acquired a rich and authentic aged patina over the decades. The structure showcases the ornate architectural style of the period, featuring a striking crenellated upper border, intricate openwork scrolling foliage, and delicate filigree detailing along the lower gallery. The entire frame rests upon beautifully cast, heavy lion paw feet that provide excellent stability for supporting heavy volumes.
The focal point of the front facade is a sequence of four vibrant champlevé enamel roundels. These circular plaques beautifully illustrate the traditional tetramorph symbols of the Four Evangelists, capturing the angel for Saint Matthew, the winged lion for Saint Mark, the winged ox for Saint Luke, and the eagle for Saint John. Enhancing this sacred iconography is a carefully arranged framework of bezel-set, multi-colored glass cabochon jewels in alternating deep ruby red and emerald green tones. Functionally, the stand features a fully adjustable rear support mechanism that moves smoothly to alter the tilting angle and height of the main reading platform.
This antique liturgical piece is in excellent overall condition. It offers an incredible display opportunity for collectors of religious artifacts, antique book enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a unique historical statement piece.
